Yeah, mackerel to tengu is like garlic to vampires.
So in the myths, tengu kidnap children. However, if you yell out "I eat mackerel!", then they will ignore you – hence, "tengu hate mackerel". But as far as I could look up, this seems to be a more modern invention?
