Hmm... in Ran's Perfect Memento entry, Akyū refers to her as the pinnacle of beast yōkai. I suppose Ran did secure her spot on the throne and unite the disparate gangs of the Animal Realm under her rule.
She and her horde attacked Gensōkyō, a Yukari appeared, and then Yakumo Ran was born.
