Could it be possible that Meiling is really the gate guard only by day, and she's actually more proactive at night as the mansion's groundskeeper? Tending the gardens, fountains, anything outside the mansion. Perhaps she even combs through the immediate surroundings too so that the natural neighboring areas also look right.
